		<description>Micro-hydro electric generation project in Guatemala, where an Electronic Load Contoller was developed for both synchronous generotors and inducion motors working as generators. The work was done as part of an technology development based internship for Alterna (previously AIDG's Tech R&#38;D Department).

		<description>RETHINKING THE EXISTING TYPOLOGY, MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS AND USER ENGAGEMENT WITH CONSUMER ELECTRONICS THROUGH LOCAL AGILE MANUFACTURING AND PRINTABLE ELECTRONICS

In 2025, consumer electronics will no longer be the same as we know them today. They will be purchased through the O.System. Using printable electronics and rapid manufacturing processes a more local consumer electronics industry is born.

In this system, people select their electronic products online. They can then visit their local O.Store to talk to the technician about the purchase and add personal touches. O.Products can constantly evolve through update cards in the post, while old electronic cards are sent back for re-manufacture or recycling.

O.update is about understanding our needs and living in a transparent system where our products are created on demand. They are no longer mass manufactured any more, but locally and uniquely tailored to individual people.

		<description>Designing technology-enhanced interventions, for crafts people in India.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/124883/1790051/DSC_2186.jpg" width="670" height="249" width_o="2048" height_o="762" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/124883/1790051/DSC_2186_o.jpg" data-mid="8823717"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
This has been done in three ways, each inspired by a case-study visit to Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya, an artisan design school in Kutch. Firstly, a low-tech network has been envisioned that connects artisans to one another, and to a cloud of information around them. A subscription-service of SMS updates has been envisioned. Secondly, we have used technology to augment the connection between an artisan and the consumer: traditionally miles distant, but today perhaps hundreds or thousands of miles away from each other. This has been achieved by the use of QR (quick response) codes: a block-printed 2D graphic, that when photographed by a consumer’s smartphone (or an in-store scanner), will transport them to the artisan’s website, showing a rich variety of information surrounding the crafted object. Lastly, a piece of design software has been prototyped, which allows block printers and weavers to experiment easily with their designs.

		<description>Foroba Yelen (Bambara: community/collective light) is a project to transform village life in rural Mali, West Africa.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/124883/2092469/mali14.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/124883/2092469/mali14_o.jpg" data-mid="15253155"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;
A collaborative design project involving the co-visioning and prototyping of two solar-powered community lights for village associations in the rural district of Cinzana, Mali. The villages have no direct power or water supply and survive on agriculture. The aim was to enable villagers to expand their cultural, educational and business activities through light, allowing work at night time. The resulting lights were mobile with detachable batteries that would be charged from two solar powered charging station in the two respective villages, Bamoussobougou and Soanogola.

Innovation Design Engineering students at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, worked in collaboration with Italian architect Matteo Ferroni and the Segou Village Connection Project headed by Boukary Konate. IDE students worked through the summer, researching, ideating, and developing concepts. This involved cross-global collaboration and knowledge sharing with team members through various modes of communication, including email, social networking website, and video conferencing technology. At the beginning of September 2011, the team traveled to Mali for two weeks to realize the project with villagers using local knowledge, materials, and supply chains.

A key aspect of the project was reproducibility of the lights and two strategies were employed. Using freely available local materials and construction techniques and the import of high quality long life components, along with the providing all design and technical drawings as open source to the local fabrication house. Sustainable approaches were: reproduction using local materials and techniques, improving quality of life by enhancing social, business and education, and new business opportunities by renting out the lights.

Design of a mobile Space Capsule and Energy production system

This was a project done with support from industry experts Thales Alenia Space, iGuzzini, PRAMAC and NASA_JSC

The aim of the next two missions to Mars is to prepare the planet for future colonisation. This is to be achieved through ‘planting’ greenhouse modules on the surface of Mars. The modules would be a mix of greenhouses for food production, and botanical gardens for plant systematic research.
The first mission is to send fully automated modules to Mars to start the initial seeding process. The units would automatically dig themselves into the ground for insulation. The second mission is a follow up with a two part vehicle and four crew members to carry out harvesting and expanding the greenhouses as well as conducting evolutionary plant research in the botanical modules. One large habitation unit, can attach itself on top of the greenhouses to allow the crew to move freely between the two spaces. The small rover vehicle, can be used for short exploration missions between the greenhouse stations.

Habitat Module with Greenhouse Module

The living habitat is exposed above the earth, while the greenhouse module is submerged below the surface with its ability to excavate the Martian soil.

		<description>A hybrid bamboo bicycle designed and made locally while living in Guatemala.
&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/124883/1736950/PP-034.jpg" width="670" height="446" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/3/124883/1736950/PP-034_o.jpg" data-mid="8542534"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

This bicycle was conceived while working in Nuevan Alianza, a jungle farming community, in Guatemala. I met a local bamboo furniture maker and worked with him to select, cut and heat-treat all the tubes. Once the geometry was decided, I combined raw hemp fibre and epoxy to create strong durable composite joints. All the tubes, except the chain stays and front forks, are bamboo. Racing wheels and a single speed gear were added later to compliment my new environment; London’s cityscape. The finishing of the bamboo was achieved by hand sanding the tubes followed by a light layer of natural tung oil to seal from moisture.

Materials:
Frame: Heat-treated Guatemalan bamboo, raw hemp fibre, marine epoxy, black paint
